New Training Resources Available for Soybeans of Other Colors

The Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS) Board of Appeals and Review, in collaboration with its Digital Media Group, has released a new instructional video on Soybeans of Other Colors (SBOC).

The video is intended primarily for officially licensed inspectors and highlights common SBOC patterns and types, including patterns observed more recently. The resource is designed to help strengthen inspection accuracy and promote consistency in soybean grading.

Training and reference resources

The following resources are available for additional guidance:

Official reference for determinations

For official determinations, inspectors should use VRI SB–12.0, Soybeans of Other Colors. This official visual reference is printed, calibrated and distributed by FGIS for use by official inspectors.

An unofficial example is available on page 106 of the referenced guidance document. It should not replace the official FGIS visual reference.

NGFA monitoring grading concerns

The National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) is aware of grading inconsistencies reported by members and has brought those concerns to FGIS. NGFA will continue working with FGIS, producer groups and other agricultural organizations on the issue.

For questions or additional information, contact the FGIS Board of Appeals and Review Subjective Analysis Group at FGISBoardofAppealsandReviewSubjectiveAnalysisGroup@usda.gov.

NGFA members can also contact Jess McCluer at jmccluer@ngfa.org.
